Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) Pendleton Skywarn supports local efforts to implement the Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS). The APRS system was designed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, and introduced by him at the 1992 TAPR/ARRL Digital Communications Conference. APRS is a packet communications protocol for disseminating live data to everyone on a network in real time. Its most visual feature is the combination of packet radio with the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite network, enabling radio amateurs to automatically display the positions of radio stations and other objects on maps on a PC. When combined with a computerized weather station, APRS is a very useful tool that can be used during severe weather events. When connected to a compatible weather station system, your APRS station can transmit live weather data such as wind speed, temp, and rainfall to the APRS network. Some local APRS digipeaters in the Pendleton County Warning Area include: In the Tri-Cities, Jump Off Joe (Call: JOJ) Yakima Valley, Moxee (Call: MOXIE) Pendleton (PDT) Radar Image with APRS Overlay - Displays the current radar image from PDT with an overlay of all APRS stations in the region APRS Weather Stations: AD7CQ - Kenewick, Benton County, WA KA7SSB - Kennewick, Benton County, WA KB7DZR - Joseph, Wallowa County, OR N7CLD - Bend, Deschutes County, OR N7NAT - Yakima, Yakima County, WA PNHLWX - Pine Hollow, Wasco County, OR W7LWS - Sunriver, Deschutes County, OR For more information on APRS, what it is, and how you can get involved, visit the Northwest APRS website at www.nwaprs.info
