The Pendleton SkywarnTM team is a group of volunteers supporting the Pendleton Oregon NWS Weather Forecast Office (WFO). As storm spotters, we serve our community by participating in an organized effort to watch for storms approaching the community and warn of the formation of severe storms or other threatening conditions.

Why are spotters still needed with today's technology? Even with the use of Doppler radar there is a need for spotters to provide field observations. The radar can only detect conditions that are favorable for events such as thunderstorms, flooding, etc.  Information is needed about whether tornadoes are actually being produced and their precise location. Also, certain types of tornadoes can form before a Doppler radar signature is detected. Storm spotters work together using amateur radio frequencies, telephone, and electronic means via the Internet using eSpotter, by reporting critical, real-time, weather observations that meet SKYWARNTM event reporting criteria to protect life and property of the local community.
